Herb Meyer knows what it means to need personal support services. As a younger man he was full of life and zest and experienced much of what life has to offer. One day while sailing he got in an accident and afterwards, he was a quadriplegic.
After a long stay in the hospital, Herb elected to live independently in his own home. At that time in
1993, there were few caregivers available. Like many others before him, he had to be very creative. He moved his caregiver into his own home and taught him how to do everything including personal care, cooking, cleaning, etc. Throughout the years, Herb has put a lot of time and energy into finding caregivers through a wide variety of sources including Marin Center for Independent Living.
Years later, Herb heard about the formation of the IHSS Public Authority of Marin, and he decided to get involved. He wanted to put his talents to work and help others too. As the Governing Board President he has really enjoyed utilizing his in-depth knowledge of in-home supportive services and helping advocate for the rights of those who need help to stay at home. On the Board, he is particularly adept at keeping his fellow Board members focused on achieving goals, and garnering support from local politicians.
Herb serves as a role model for all people. He continues to enjoy sailing in the Bay with his sailing buddies who he says, “have been one of his core support groups along with his singing group, caregivers and his significant other.”
