In-Home Supportive Services Public Authority of Marin

Bob Roberts, Vice Chair and Treasurer

Bob Roberts is a man of many talents with a long and notable history of furthering social causes. He was first drawn to help people with disabilities when he was a child. His interest was inspired in an unusual way. While accompanying his radio disc jockey celebrity dad who was doing a show at a Bob Roberts, Vice Chair and Treasurer Summer Camp for children with disabilities, he noted that many of the kids did not live at home. He was puzzled that other children had been marginalized as a result of their disability, and he vowed that he first would help make society more inclusive.

Year later as an adult in Marin County, he met Vernon Cox who spent his life as an advocate, creating change. Vernon is credited with first coining the phrase “System Change Advocate,” and was also a founding Board member of the IHSS Public Authority of Marin and the Marin Center for Independent Living (Marin CIL). Through a fortuitous partnership with Vernon, Bob helped create the Apartment Project, a non-profit to get people out of nursing homes into independent living situations at home.

Almost 25 years ago, Bob was hired at Marin CIL as the Attendant Referral Director. Throughout the years, he has held many positions at Marin CIL, and in1992, he became the Executive Director. Bob’s other professional affiliations include being a founding Board member of IHSS Public Authority of Marin, Board member of Home Care Consortium of Marin (HCCM), Board member of Blind and Visually Impaired of Marin, Board member of Marin Homes for Independence, Chairmen of the Medicaid Defense Fund and Chairmen of the Bell Springs Foundation.

In his spare time, Bob enjoys spending time on Bell Springs Foundation land in Mendocino County with his dog Leo, and growing fresh vegetables with his wife Annie.

When asked how the average person can help our society be more inclusive of all people, he suggests, “People can help to get [Marin County’s Ballot Initiative for a Transportation Tax] Measure A passed. This much needed Transportation money would support Whistlestop Wheels which provides transportation to seniors and people with disabilities. Be sure to vote in November!”
